“Seed belongs to us all!” This slogan arose a few years ago in response to the rapidly consolidating power of the seed industry and particularly its patenting of varieties. Is this slogan merely an emotional statement or can it become reality? This question was the starting point for a new study – how can seed and the plant breeding process be understood as 'public commons' in the best sense of the word from both a legal and an economic point of view?
